ChatGPT behaves like an answer interface, a search client, a summarizer, and sometimes a citation layer. It may rewrite the user’s prompt, fan out related searches, retrieve candidate sources, compose an answer, then show only a few citations. Some pages influence the response without appearing in the final source list.
This matters because ChatGPT is now a real information surface. An NBER working paper by OpenAI’s economic research team and Harvard’s David Deming analyzed 1.5 million consumer-plan messages from May 2024 to June 2025. By June 2025, ChatGPT had reached about 10% of the world’s adult population. “Practical Guidance,” “Seeking Information,” and “Writing” made up nearly 80% of conversations.
So the opportunity is real. The mental model is usually bad. Adding FAQ schema and waiting is SEO superstition with better branding.
The usual sequence looks like this: a user asks a question, the assistant expands or rewrites it, retrieval systems find candidate sources, the model composes an answer, and the citation layer chooses what to show. Your page has to survive that whole path—discoverable, relevant, parseable, and trusted.

Ahrefs’ November 2025 AI SEO statistics report, based on its own datasets, found that 76% of AI Overview citations came from pages already ranking in Google’s top 10 organic results. That supports the boring foundation: if you cannot rank, you make AI citation harder than it needs to be.
Then comes the counterweight. In an August 2025 analysis of 15,000 long-tail queries, Ahrefs found that only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity ranked in Google’s top 10 for the original prompt. External assistants may search sub-questions, comparisons, definitions, entities, or supporting facts. Your page may miss the original prompt while ranking for a related question the assistant uses during composition.

Citeability has four jobs. The page must be easy to retrieve, easy to parse, easy to quote, and easy to trust. Most advice only covers the third one.

The best pages usually give a short, direct answer near the top, then support it with proof, steps, examples, definitions, and dates. Search Engine Land’s answer-capsule angle is right here: a clean paragraph gives the model something to quote. The rest of the page gives it a reason to choose you.
For a “how” query, use a one-paragraph answer, then a numbered process. For a “what is” query, define the term early. For a comparison query, include a table. For claims that need trust, name sources and dates.

A SaaS company mentioned in coupon directories and dead press release sites should not expect much. A SaaS company mentioned in comparison pages, industry reports, partner docs, review sites, podcast transcripts, and expert roundups has a better shot.

Start with industry publications, partner pages, integration marketplaces, review platforms, founder interviews, podcasts with transcripts, comparison pages, original data studies, and documentation pages. Links still help. Unlinked brand mentions may also contribute to entity confidence, although I would not pretend anyone has perfect proof of how every system weighs them (especially if your brand name is ambiguous).
Use schema. Just do not confuse labels with authority.

Article schema, Organization schema, Author schema, FAQ schema where valid, and sameAs links can help machines interpret a page. They do not make an untrusted page worth citing. Schema can label the bottle—it cannot make the wine good.

Server analytics undercount AI visibility because users may never click. Referral traffic is only one part of the value. Citation visibility, brand recall, and assisted demand matter too, but they are harder to tie to one session.
